Watch now (3 min) | My Geneva Academy 9th-12th Graders Singing Bach's "Little Organ Fugue" - We have a choir by night because we have a musicianship class by day.
Angela Duckworth discusses the misunderstanding of talent and long effort in her good book, Grit.
There is a self-service in the misunderstanding, of course, because talent as a divine gift could not be expected of everyone, and I am therefore off the hook for long effort. I think this helps to explain the tenacity of the misunderstanding. But your gracious response earns you my respect.
Wonderfully modeled Classical Christian literacy-centered music education! You’re making a difference in music education of young people! I find it tricky sometimes to fit in music history on top of literacy. I do try to present music history in the context of the music we sing, but time does not always provide in-depth study of it. It is like trying to fit in phonics, grammar, literature, and history in biweekly classes. Kodaly based literacy and musicianship have also been my focus, but there’s the nagging feeling of not teaching enough music history. How do you fit everything in? Or should we just resign to the fact that we can’t teach everything, and choose a few things we can teach well?
