We just finished our eleventh annual Jubilate Deo Summer Music Camp in northeast Louisiana. It was our biggest camp yet, with 357 music campers and their families from 15 states. Above is a video montage from one of our camp alumni, Hays Porter. He does an exceptional job of giving a glimpse into this week of joyful music literacy and Bible & Art instruction.
Each day, the students start with a brief sung chapel service led by
. Then, the campers from grades kindergarten through college freshmen have classes in music, bible, art, folk dancing, etc. There is a student recital on Friday morning, a family folk dance on Friday night, and finally, the closing concert on Saturday morning. The concert music and theme are put together by our camp music director, Dr. David Erb, from New Saint Andrews College in Moscow, ID. This year the concert's theme was “The Lord’s Prayer,” with musical selections of various styles and time periods all dealing with The Lord’s Prayer from Matthew 6 and prayer in general. The concert featured musical selections from composers including Bach, Billings, Moses Hogan, Duruflé, Stravinsky, Tallis, and others. Each year, we bring in Christian Kodály music educators from around the country to work with our music campers to give them joyful literacy towards a concert performance goal on that Saturday morning. We want to give them a taste of what can be accomplished. Many of them have not been in choir or music literacy classes.
