I want to recommend a project to those interested in musical settings of the Psalms. My friend and colleague Dr. David R. Erb has written a collection of through-composed Psalm settings over the past few decades called Cantica Sanctorum: A Collection of Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs. David strongly believes that the word of God should dwell in you richly, and he believes that one of the best ways for it to do that is to sing settings that help you memorize God’s word as it is translated in the Bible. Here’s the link on Spotify to listen to recordings of these compositions.

2024 ‘Cantica Sanctorum’ Update from David Erb:
Hello, I'm excited to share this with you all:
At long last, a Piano Edition of the Cantica Sanctorum is on its way. Full written out accompaniments for all 50 psalm settings as well as the other scripture songs, hymns, and canons by David Erb will be available for use in churches, schools, and homes. (Click here to view a sample.)
This publication will be the first offering of a newly formed music publishing company, Praetorius Publications, by David Erb and Joshua Roberts, which will launch later this year. The company will begin with a focus on accessible quality choral literature from the church historic as well as recent compositions by active church composers. There will also follow music for organ, voice, instrumental ensembles, etc.
Please consider financially supporting this startup company which seeks to provide musical guidance and resources to the church community. Donations large or small are welcome. If you give $50.00 or more and register your name with your donation, we will mail you a copy of the new Cantica Sanctorum: Piano Edition if you simply email us with a request at info@praetoriuspublications.com.
Psalm 23 Sample Recordings and PDF
For me personally, Dr. Erb’s Psalm 23, which is the first one of these Psalms he composed has a meaningful connection. When my father passed away in January of 2022, he was taking care of his older brother, who was in a skilled nursing facility near my house. I took over that job until my uncle passed away six weeks later. My father-in-law stopped by the night before my uncle passed away and mentioned that we could recite Psalm 23 for my uncle while he rested peacefully. I said we could sing it. I had memorized Psalm 23 from having taught it to our church Sunday School morning assembly, and it was “dwelling in me richly,” and I could sing it for my uncle that night. Below is a PDF sample of the accompaniment version of this song from the forthcoming piano edition. Also is a YouTube recording below that.
Additionally, here is a video from several years ago with Dr. Erb playing and singing it, with the music at the bottom.
If you want to support this project, here’s the link to donate via GoFundMe. I know it would be a blessing to Dr. Erb and the work he and Joshua Roberts are starting with Praetorius Publications.
